PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY – LEVULAN
Photodynamic Therapy is considered the “gold standard ” for non-surgical skin rejuvenation. Levulan Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), is also more commonly known as a ‘photofacial’. This treatment is intended for actinic keratoses, or a pre-cancerous lesion, sun damage, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. The photofacial treatment also has the unique ability to minimize pores and reduce oil glands, effectively treating stubborn acne, rosacea, while improving the appearance of some acne scars. *Individual results may vary.
WHY IT WORKS
Levulan Kerastick Topical Solution is applied to the surface of skin. The solution is then absorbed by the Ak cells where it is converted to a chemical that makes the cells extremely sensitive to light. When the AK cells are exposed to the BLU-U blue light illuminator, a reaction occurs which destroys the AK cells. This procedure results in significant improvement in precancerous conditions such as actinic keratosis, sun damaged skin and potentially superficial skin cancers. It improves wrinkles, pore size, skin texture, pigmentation, rosacea, sebaceous hyperplasia and potentially prevents the development of skin cancer. A qualified health care professional will do an assessment and application of the solution 30 min max. The Patient leaves and returns to complete the treatment 3 hours later for the Blulight treatment which is about 17 min. This procedure can cause discomfort up to 48 hours, low downtime, no prescription to fill, no daily medication to remember. *Individual results may vary.

FAQ’S ABOUT PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY – LEVULAN
Before treatment
Be sure to tell health care provider if you are taking any oral medications or using any topical prescriptions or non-prescription products on your face or scalp. Bring adequate sun protective items with you to your appointment such as a wide brimmed hat and umbrella.
How does photodynamic therapy work?
A photosensitizing agent is applied to the skin for a period of time and is then activated by a light source and causes a chemical reaction in the skin. The chemical reaction helps to destroy selective cells.
Is the procedure painful?
No, PDT is not painful. Sometimes the skin may feel warm or you may experience some tingling or slight itching during the treatment.
How long does a treatment take?
About up to two hours, including application of the photosensitizer; incubation from ½ hour to an hour or longer, and light exposure of 16 – 25 minutes.
After treatment...
You may experience side effects following your Levulan PDT treatment.
Most common side effects: Burning/stinging, which can be severe, may last up to 24 hrs after BLU-U treatment.
Redness and swelling which may last up to 4 weeks after BLU-U treatment.
Scaling/crusting which may last up to 4 weeks after your BLU-U treatment.
You may apply moisturizers as needed.
Avoid exposing the treated area to sunlight and other forms of bright light for at least 48 hrs. Examples include exam room examination lights, tanning bed lights, and house hold lights at close range. Sunscreens will not protect against photosensitivity reactions caused by visible light during this time.
How do I know if this is the right treatment for me?
Consultations are complimentary with one of our medically supervised skin care experts. If you have acne or rosacea, book a consultation to see if this is the right treatment for you. All your questions and concerns will be addressed, and any additional information can be obtained at that time.
