ABOUT DR. BIRO
Dr. Biro’s current practice includes medical aesthetics in addition to a referral based primary care dermatology service emphasizing skin cancer screening and the management of light sensitive conditions such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and vitiligo.
Dr. Andy graduated as a Medical Doctor from the McMaster University School of Medicine in 1992 and completed his residency in Family Medicine in 1994 becoming a member of the Canadian College of Family Physicians (CCFP) in the same year and a licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC).
His premedical education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours (BSc (Hons)) from the Department of Biochemistry, Simon Fraser University (1986) with a Minor in Kinesiology. He completed a Master of Science (MSc) Degree from the University of British Columbia (1989) with work on neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson Disease and ALS through the Department of Pharmacology.
Following several years of full service Family Practice including obstetrics, emergency and in patient coverage he became more focused on Sports and Occupational Medicine. It was in the setting of Emergency Medicine and injections for joint and overuse injuries that he was first introduced to Botox, initially for the treatment of chronic migraines.
Dr. Andy Biro holds a Diploma in Dermatology from the University of Cardiff, Wales. This is a Diploma specifically designed for those with skills in General and Family Practice. It is considered General Practice Dermatology (focussed GP practice) and Dr. Biro wishes to make clear that he is not a Specialist Dermatologist. He is does however spend his professional efforts in particular toward the screening of progressively more common skin cancers and the treatment of photoresponsive skin conditions.
The Primary Care Dermatology portion of his medical practice takes place at 208 First Avenue West in Qualicum Beach where we provide phototherapy (narrow band UVB therapy) for the treatment of psoriasis and some other skin conditions. A referral is generally required from your family physician to access these services. All medical Dermatology and phototherapy services, including consultations, are fully covered by the BC Medical Services Plan, the Provincial health care insurance.
Dr. Andy has been a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) since 1995 and practiced here on Vancouver Island since 2003. His professional pursuits include a Diploma of Practical Dermatology from the University of Cardiff, Wales, Laser Photorejuvination, Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine. He is a member of the College of Family Practice in Canada (CCFP), the Canadian Association of Aesthetic Medicine (CAAM), the Canadian and British Columbia Medical Associations (CMA, BCMA), the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) and the American Society of Lasers in Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS).
